Meet Brett

Native Texan and District Attorney Brett Smith is a work horse, not a show horse. During his time as Grayson County District Attorney, Smith has worked tirelessly to make the county safer for all who live there. He has been tough on crime, implemented safety policies, introduced awareness seminars focused on keeping children safe and is a civically engaged leader in the community. Smith has earned a broad coalition of local support through his years of service and is ready to continue his work of keeping criminals behind bars to protect the people of Grayson County.

Bio

In May of 2018, Assistant District Attorney Brett Smith was appointed as Interim District Attorney by a unanimous vote of the Grayson County Commissioners Court. He was then then elected District Attorney by a subsequent unanimous vote of the Executive Committee of the Grayson County Republican Party. His appointment came after former District Attorney Joe Brown was appointed to the position of U.S. Attorney. Smith was re-elected by the citizens of Grayson County in November of 2020. 
 
Smith is a graduate of St. Edward’s University and earned his law degree from Texas A&M University School of Law (formerly Texas Wesleyan School of Law). 
 
Prior to serving with the Grayson County District Attorney’s Office, Smith worked in law enforcement as a criminal investigator with the United States Treasury. During this time, he became a distinguished graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy.  
 
Leading up to Smith’s selection as District Attorney, he served as a Special Prosecutor for the Grayson County District Attorney’s Office prosecuting jail cases in all 3 District Courts in Grayson County.  Smith was designated as the lead juvenile prosecutor of the office and had the responsibility of prosecuting significant white collar criminal cases.    
 
Dedicated to leading by example, District Attorney Smith has prosecuted hundreds of felony cases, including at least ten murders and dozens of Child Sexual Assault and Possession of Child Pornography cases. Smith also routinely assisting prosecutors with the day-to-day business in the courtroom.  
 
Brett is married to his wife, Shelly, of 22 years and they have an 18-year-old son, Hayden. Brett and Shelly also raised their nephew, Dylan, and they take great pride in his accomplishments in military service. Dylan served 13 years in the 82nd Airborne of the United States Army and performed two tours of duty in Iraq with the rank of Sgt. 1st Class.
