Community Leadership & Accomplishments

  • Serves on the board of the Children’s Advocacy Center to guide policy and fundraising for child victims.

  • ï‚·Serves as 2023 Chair of the Texoma Behavioral Health Leadership Team (TBHLT) has led efforts to support jail diversion programs, the continuum of community care and mental health reform in Grayson County.    

​

  • ï‚·Serves on both the Jail Diversion and Diversion Center subcommittees working to create here and now jail diversion for mentally ill persons with criminal justice involvement.   

​

  • ï‚·Serves as the Chair of Texoma Counsel of Government (TCOG) Criminal Justice Advisory Committee (CJAC) which awarded nearly $800,000 in 2022 for crime prevention and victim services in our region through the Office of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division. 

​

  • ï‚·Led the District Attorney’s Office during the pandemic without closing office doors for even one day and designated all prosecutors, investigators and support personnel as essential employees. 

​

  • ï‚·Increased participation in the U.S. Marshal Service’s Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force resulting in dozens of nationwide and international arrests of violent fugitives. 

​

  • ï‚·Began the implementation of “Sexual Predator Awareness” seminars for parents, community members and teachers with cooperation of local school districts. These programs were recognized by the TDCAA (State Prosecutor Association) in January of 2020.  

​

  • ï‚·Appointed to 2023 Editorial Board of the TDCAA.

​

  • ï‚·Under Smith’s leadership, the District Attorney’s office has been recognized in several published article of the Texas Prosecutor, which is the statewide magazine for TDCAA. 

​

  • Has served twice as the President of the Grayson County Bar Association and Grayson County Young Lawyers Association.  

​

  • ï‚·Is a past President of the Board for the House of Eli, a ministerial home for boys. 

​

  • ï‚·Coordinated the Grayson County debut (and all following showings) of “ONE PILL KILLS” presentation, along with the DEA and U.S. Attorney’s Office, to warn of the deadly dangers of fentanyl. 

​

  • ï‚·In conjunction with local law enforcement and courts, Smith increased the availability of magistrates for DWI blood warrants to support Grayson County’s “no refusal” policy on DWI enforcement. 

​

  • ï‚·Continued to support and expand pre-trial diversion courts and programs to provide treatment and supervision to first time, non- violent offenders. 

​

  • ï‚·Assisted with the implementation of the Grayson County Juvenile RISE Drug Court program that was officially designated by the State of Texas as only the 11th juvenile specialty court in the state. 

​

  • ï‚·In coordination with commissioner’s court and under Smith’s leadership realigned office resources to allow one attorney to focus full time efforts on prosecuting Child Protective Services cases for the District Attorney’s office and allocated more resources to juvenile prosecution. 

​

  • ï‚·Initiated a designated “after hours” cell phone number for law enforcement to communicate with the District Attorney’s office and reach a prosecutor 24/7, along with a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to be on scene and accompany law enforcement, also 24/7. The special phone number has been given out to all law enforcement. 

​

  • ï‚·Smith is specifically trained on “Officer Involved Shooting Investigations” by the Texas Rangers. 

​

  • ï‚·Since assuming office in 2018, Smith has been on-scene for all five officer involved shootings that have occurred in Grayson County during his time in office.  

​

  • ï‚·As part of the Jail Reduction Special Prosecution Team, Brett and his team were able to reduce the number of Grayson County jail inmates being housed out of county to zero, saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

​

  • Smith and his family are active members of the First United Methodist Church. 

​

  • ï‚·Holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a purple belt in Jiu Jitsu. He has earned eight Texas State titles in full contact martial arts including a silver medal in the Texas Police Olympics and a National Collegiate Championship Medal.

​

  • ï‚·Sustaining member of Republican Party of Texas and an active member of the Grayson County Republican Party for many years
